The opening of the convent at Vittal came into existence through the initiative of our 3 French Sisters. Sr. Anthome Marie, Sr. Margurite & Sr Marie Eugene. The Bishop of Mangalore late Rt. Rev. Doctor Basil D’Souza invited the sisters to open a house at Vittal by providing us a land. It was on May 31, 1964 that the sisters landed in Vittal and stayed in a rented house. Sr. Alphonsa, Sr. Agnes Mary and Sr. Coletta pitched their tent and with enthusiasm began the work of education. The first sisters who formed a comity at Vittal were Sr. Alphonsa, Sr. Agnes and Sr. Coletta.
Sr. Mary Alphonsa was appointed as the Animator. Sr. Agnes & Sr. Coletta were teaching in the Kannada Aided School belonging to she diocese. Along with them was Gertrude a tertiary belonging to the lay associate of the Third order of St Francis of Assisi. She was a simple, unassuming. Though she was not a professed sister, but she truly loved and lived the Franciscan Spirituality. She had a great love for our Congregation.
Today we reap she fruits in the garden especially the coconut trees, it is bcoy of the hard work of Gertrude. She lived and died 2001 on the 30th of December. Sr. Mary Lawrentia soon joined the comity as a member, In 1967 the tailoring school was started on the verandah of the convent. The project of the Centre was sponsored by Mr. John Delattre, a benefactor from France. Other subjects like craft and embroidery were also taught so that the young girls were equipped with skills for their future life. The Newly built convent was built in the year 1965 and was blessed by Bishop Basil D'Souza.
The sisters rendered their services in the parish school, substation, attending S.C.C meeting, catechism, house visiting, Preparing for First Holy Holy communion etc., In the Jubilee year 2000, a celebration of the Christa Jayanthi was held at Mysore. Sr. Mary Lawrentia with the comity, participated in the great event and just returned back to the comity. It was the fatigue after the travel exhausted and had a massive attack and died in the house on 30th December 2000. It was a shock for all to accept sudden death of a dynamic & active sister"
During the time of Fr. Eric Crasta, Parish Priest, the play school was shifted to our convent(St. Paul's). Sr. Angelina was sent to help in the year 2016. Almost 50 years, our old house was not in a good condition, so permission was granted by Sr. Angelora provincial to build a new convent In the year 2014 ground floor was built with 6 rooms and a kitchen.
In 2023, the newly built renovated Convent and a parlour was built and blessed by Most. Rev. Dr. Peter Paul Saldanha on February on 9th February 2023.
